A novel technology developed in a partnership between AgroPlas AS and GasPlas AS makes it possible to turn biogas or natural gas into hydrogen gas and solid carbon.
Hydrogen can be used as a fuel for vehicles, to produce heat and electricity, or to produce a number of valuable products; carbon can be used to enhance biogas production, to make carbon-enriched organic fertilizer, and to immobilize toxic materials in polluted soil and sediments.
The technology uses microwaves to get methane into the cold plasma state, and enables profitable utilisation of methane for energy and materials completely without emissions.

A less known method for producing energy and materials from methane is to use microwaves to get the methane into the plasma state.
Microwaves are short electromagnetic waves – longer than infrared but shorter than radio waves, that are produced when pulses of electrons are sent through a magnetic field.
Microwaves are commonly applied to heat food and liquids in microwave ovens and to measure distance and detect moving objects in radars.
When methane molecules are hit by microwaves in the GasPlas reactor, the electron bonds between the single carbon (C) and four hydrogen (H) atoms making up the methane (CH4) molecule are broken up.
This turns the gas into plasma for some microseconds, before the ions and electrons are recombined to solid clusters of thousands of carbon atoms (Cn) in various configurations and hydrogen gas (H2). Microwave plasma is known as cold plasma since the microwaves only hit the electrons and not the atom nucleus where virtually all the atom’s mass is found, limiting the temperature to as little as 200 degrees Celsius.
This is very different from thermal or hot plasma which is made by heating the whole atom/molecule, causing temperatures of 2000 degrees Celsius or more. Read more about plasma technology at the GasPlas website.

Cold plasma cracking of methane is widely used in industry
There are several hundred companies operating commercial microwave cold plasma processes, producing highly valuable materials such as diamond coatings on drill heads.
These processes typically produce small volumes of products with high economic values, operate at very low pressure (close to vacuum) and are batch processes (not operating continuously). It has been showed that microwave cold plasmas can be used to make highly valuable carbon products such as carbon nano tubes, carbon fibres and carbon blacks.
These highly valuable potential applications have, however, not been harnessed due to the three-fold challenge of a) producing industrial volumes of plasma, b) operating at atmospheric pressure and c) achieving efficient separation of solid and gaseous products on a continuous basis.

The GasPlas cold plasma reactor uses microwaves to crack biomethane into hydrogen and carbon black. The technology directs microwaves towards a continuous flow of methane and turns the gas into the plasma state for a very short while.
After the plasma stage, gaseous hydrogen and solid carbon black is efficiently separated in the reactor.
The process is as efficient in small as in large scale, and operates on a continuous basis at atmospheric pressure, and can be adapted for a broad variety of applications.
